Chapter Sixteen
I might have run directly into the path of the Manupian security officials if I hadnât heard them coming just as I was passing an unlocked door to a storeroom. I ducked inside and waited among the many shelves of cleaning supplies, with my ear pressed up against the door, until they had gone.
It was my first piece of luck.
The second was a cleanerâs brown boiler suit hanging up on a hook at the back of the door. I disposed of my white catering trousers and climbed into them. The storeroom also gave me somewhere to leave the breather, which I hid behind a load of boxes at the back.
My third piece of luck was that it seemed Louissi had done what I had suggested and told the security officials I had escaped out onto the planetâs surface. Because, by the time I got up to the main factory, through a door under the main stairwell I didnât even know was there, no one was looking for me inside. The last of the workers who had evacuated because of the fire alarm were returning to their workstations and restarting their machinery. As they were coming in, I was able to slip out without anyone giving me a second look.
After that, my luck ran out.
By the time I reached the transport station to take a ride out to the docking area, the place was crawling with black-uniformed Manupian security officials. It hadnât taken them long to conclude that I had either escaped across the planetâs surface and had somehow got back into Shangi city, or hadnât got out onto the planet at all and was still in the city trying to get out.
I stayed there just long enough to watch people being stopped, one by one, and asked questions as they came and went from the station. All the security officials had P-tabs which they were showing to the passengers. I got close enough to hear one of them say my name â my real name â and I backed away. If they knew who I was, my picture was probably on their P-tabs and I needed to get out of there.
The only other way out of the city that I knew was an internal hub where supplies, such as food, were brought in from the outer docks and distributed in smaller vehicles to various places inside Shangi. Where vehicles came in, they could also get out. But that was also crawling with Manupian security officials checking each vehicle and drawing considerable complaints from the drivers caught up in it all.
I couldnât even send a message to Freddi. The P-tab he had given me was, for all I knew, still secured to the leg of the table in the meeting room in the Jonsonii factory.
I was trapped. The only other person I could turn to for help was Mel.
